It is suggested that the characters arrive slightly later than the guests (to allow for late comers) and leave after the guests have left (to avoid ruining the magic of them arriving/departing in their car). This also allows the princesses to help the birthday child say goodbye to their guests then have a few minutes to thank them for having them at their party.
